If you're making money off of someone else's ideas without permission than "yes" that is wrong and it is possible to get into trouble.
If you're only making things for yourself (just for fun or what-not) then as far as I know it's really not an issue PROVIDED that you don't gain in any financial way from your creations (i.e. if you get a job because a company liked your drawing of Egon then "yes" that technically is also wrong too.) OR provided that whatever you create doesn't damage the Ghostbusters franchise or decrease Sony's earnings in ANY way.
Also, you're not just dealing with Copyright. Depending on what you create you're also dealing with Trademark and Patent (the laws vary for each).

That's not all true. There isn't anything illegal with having an Egon you drew in your portfolio, and then getting hired to work for a company.

you would have to sell a crap load of stuff for it to be considered copyright infringement you would actually have to have a company or something.
for example what they did with ghostbusters in the filmation. if that was done after the real ghostbusters first came out it would be copyright infringe ment. you understand?

I'm not too sure about that. You're not allowed to use other people's copyrighted works to advertise for yourself. As far as I know a drawing of someone else's character in your portfolio falls under advertising.
It's something that I believe isn't often enforced but (as far as I know) if the rights holder wanted to make a case out of it they could. I believe there are possible exceptions but it depends on the circumstances.
Also, infringement is infringement. It doesn't matter if you're a company or not. The only true deciding factor is whether or not a company decides that it's worth their time and money and risk of bad press to take action against you.
I recall a kid getting into legal trouble when the "Simpsons" first came out because he was using posters of Bart (that he drew) for some event.
Take it from someone who has an art degree.

I'm pretty sure you won't get into any trouble by just doing some cosplay. I can't answer w/ 100% certainty because copyright law is intentionally written with countless "gray areas". I have yet to find anyone (even a lawyer) who can sit me down and say "this is how copyright works". The reason for this is because the law itself is designed to be debated on a case by case basis.
Seeing as you're just dressing up for fun I'm pretty sure it's not an issue (if it was an issue I'm sure that Halloween and sci-fi cons would be an utter legal nightmare). As long as you're not earning any money, declaring that you created Ghostbusters, or are planning to do something that could damage the GB franchise you should be fine.
In regards to Ecto-1, I think you can drive one around but you can't use the flashers or sirens. The best people to ask for sure are the people who build their own Ecto's. If they're serious about what they do they should be up to date on all the laws regarding such things.
P.S. If you're really really concerned about all of this just email Sony (Colombia Pictures?) and ask them how they feel about such things. There's a possibility that you won't like their answer but at least it should be an honest response and you'll finally know for certain. Then you could enlighten us.

Adam and I want to make our GB computer games available to all on GBN, but the games are so large that a download from a site is just stupid. All the info would have to be burned to CDs.
Naturally, a disclaimer would be written on the back, as well as giving the trademarks their respective company names.
If you're only charging a GBN member the price of the CD and case, as well as S&H, is that still infringing on copyrights? I wouldn't think so....there's no profit being gained.

Well, that means that ghostbusters.net is technically breaking the law.
I guess this also kills the GB RPG project.
Sorry folks, but if this whole thing m,ay get me in srious legal trouble, then I can't do it. Sorry folks.

Well, don't give up completely. If you read the whole FAQ it does say that some companies don't mind fan-works because they're basically free advertising.
I've heard of some companies cracking down on fan-pages/works in other fandoms but I have yet to hear of any fan based GB stuff getting shut down. It is entirely possible that Sony/Columbia Pictures doesn't mind.
Take "Red Ketchup" for instance. If he truly is a representative of Sony coming HERE to ask US what type of products we would like to see from them, well if true then that may be evidence that Sony truly doesn't mind.
Just e-mail them and ask them what their stance is on GB fan works. You may be surprised.
