A Great Day indeed!
Star Trek is soon to be DEAD! Right now its sitting in the hospital on life support.

"TrekToday reports that video game publisher Activision has announced it is pulling out of its contract with Viacom (whom owns Paramount) and is suing them for damages caused by the declining value of the Trek franchise. In early 1998 Activision signed a ten-year contract with the company to develop games based on the franchise, a time when the series was riding well with both DS9 & Voyager still airing and the film franchise still strong with the success of "First Contact" and "Insurrection" around the corner. Since then however both "Insurrection" and "Nemesis" bombed, DS9 & Voyager wrapped, and the "Enterprise" prequel has suffered from consistent low ratings - leaving a once strong franchise crawling forward. In an official statement, Activision says "Through its actions and inactions, Viacom has let the once proud Star Trek franchise stagnate and decay. Viacom has released only one Star Trek movie since entering into agreement with Activision and has recently informed Activision it has no current plans for further Star Trek films. Viacom also has allowed two Star Trek television series to go off the air and the remaining series suffers from weak ratings. Viacom also frustrated Activision's efforts to coordinate the development and marketing of its games with Viacom's development and marketing of its new movies and television series".

saber_holder. no offense, but, that has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. no fanbase is better than another. especially when you consider that so many of them intersect. I myself am a Trek, Ghostbusters, Stargate, Babylon 5, Buffy, X-Files, Gundam, Evangelion, etc., etc., etc. fan.

Ehh, okay, a little to positive a reaction to the death of a fan base, just keep in mind, would you be dancing if GB were dying? We were nearly there, but now things are rejuvenating.

Tribbles: the little furball creatures from the original series
Uhura: the black lady from the original series (very classy woman in real life...Nichelle Nichols, the actress that is.)
Dax: the woman with the spots on her body from Deep Space Nine
Torres: the half-Klingon woman from Voyager
that Vulcan from Enterprise (T'Pol): self explanatory.

I somewhat concur with Kingpin. besides...Trek has seen this before. the original pilot episode was rejected by NBC. then NBC cancelled the show not once, but twice... at the ends of seasons 2 & 3. then there was the shortlived animated series in the early 70s, after which there wasn't much of anything til The Motion Picture came out in 79. Trek as it is now, has been running nonstop since 1986, when they began to develop The Next Generation. You ask me, a diehard Trek fan, it is time for another break (assuming you can talk Berman and Braga into letting go, as well as convince Paramount that the cash cow needs a rest)

All these people that hate Star Trek...tisk tisk.
I don't see how you can hate the show that started it all. Without Star Trek you more than likely you wouldn't have Star Wars. Now don't get me wrong, I grew up with both and enjoy both equally, maybe Star Wars a wee bit more. But they both have their respective good qualities.
It is a sad day indeed when Star Trek finally passes. Always remember that Star Wars will come to an end as well. Which will be a sad day for all.
