I can't really help with the organising aspect, but here's a few things I can suggest:

GhostCon
BusterCon
You might also want to see if you could try to get JMS or one of the other RGB writers/producers.
heh, maybe even one of the still-alive vocal artists? 
Though, howabout this as an idea for the convention ID cards. They basically have both your real name and if you're a member here, your screen name.

This is why I keep suggesting (at least initially) small, organized gatherings. Everybody wants to name it and think about what cool t-shirt can be made, and who should come as a guest speaker and nobody has yet to go list off to me all the organizational things that have to take place in order to make it possible to have a convention that needs t-shirts, and guests, and a name.
There's enthusiasm and there's practicality.

Sony will want royalties, it will cost money to get the convenion hall, more money for smaller things, consessions, chairs, tables, lighting fixtures, mechinal problems, cleaning, set-up, then you have to pay for security, will there be dealer stands? Games? What, will there be a schedual, when will it take place? How much will admission be, who will attend, can you get guests that you can rely on? Advertisment? All this IF you get the go ahead from Sony. Like I said, a GB convention will not be happening in the near future... Besides little things liek this it can come down to smaller things like, what the weather is like and what time fo the year. Is it tourist season? Besides, look at your location ideas! Going to the movie in New York is costly, but renting a convention hall! JEBUS!

When I have a bad day, I just feel a whole lot better knowing there are such cheerful optomistic people like GBVA here on Ghostbusters.net. 
PS: Its really cool that a bunch of people are voicing their support for a convention in their signatures. Just another way to get the word out!

I can't say I've ever heard of a studio demanding royalties from a convention (unless it's one they set up themselves) - most conventions are set up as not-for-profit organizations, with all money made cycled back into the convention.
But yes, other than that, the rest of it is a fair sampling of all the stuff that needs to be done in order to organize a fan convention.
My office is in the process of moving buildings, so for the weekend, my email might be flaky, but I'll still be checking the boards and my IM apps will be running. Just FYI.

Good points Castewar. And it'd be great to make a few more Ghostheads in the process while at the joined convention.
Example:
"Hey! Hey!! Ghostbuster!"
"Yeah?"
"Cool suit! Haven't seen ghostbusters in years! Care if I join you guys?"
"Sure thing!"
Well... something like that.

I'm comming from the standpoint that it's making money and sony could decide to be a... er bad word. But yeah, for the most part your right. Im gonna see if I can find one of my connections here about doing conventions. He organizes small conventions in Virginia, and also organized ImagenCon. His name is Brett, I'll see if I can get his phone number or e-mail for ya. He'd know the most about doing this sortta thing.

Hey, if anyone wants to see my t-shirt sketches ideas (for the big GB convention next year), just let me know! I got some cool ideas.
(I'm saying this again just in case not everyone saw it before and since the idea of a big convention is in the works now)

Actually, I made a bunch of Ghostbusters t-shirts this past Halloween (me and my friends went as a group of teenagers from the eighties). I wore a mullet wig too. I did this reallt cool custom GB tee that I drew myself. Really quite cool, but alas, I can't find the pic. If I can find the original drawings, I'll scan and post 'em.

Hey guys! Its great to see more enthusiasm, but we can't get too far ahead of ourselves. We are currently looking for larger conventions to join as a prelude to an independent Ghostbusters convention sometime in the future. Castewar has created a map on Proton Charging that has locations of ghostheads and possible convention locations. Take a look and post your info. That way, it will be easier to organize.
