I think the only reason this hasnt happened yet is not because of lack of interest, but because of lack of energy and pessimism. We could do it if we really tried.
"There's gotta be some positive energy left in this burned out 'burg. We just need a way to mobilize it!"
P.S. I'm gonna find the exact wording and edit over the weekend so I don't get yelled at by a quote purist.

Well, I'am in. We either need to rent a hall somewhere, or maybe a convention center or something

Outstanding, I think the first move would be to put together a planning committee. They would make all arrangements so that everything is nice and organized. Ideas would be subitted to this committee and they would make decisions as far as a location, programs , activities, and what not. Lets not let this idea die.
I know I'm relatively new, but I've seen the devotion of all you guys to props and fan fics, spending your time and money. If we could channel this energy into a convention, it would raise Ghostbusters awareness nation and world wide.
Lets not let this die.

I agree we should start small and maybe by the 30th anniversary of Gb's it will be in New york City and one of the highlights of of the Convetion is to visit all the location spots. Have Cast and crew from Gb's talk about about the movies. But if we start small we can like AJ said have it a house but that person must have a nice size TV so we can watch Gb's. BTW the Star Trek convetions took like a long time to get popular and now they travel all over the world. Also non GBN memeber will go if we advertise it right

Glad to see more enthusiasm!
First off lets make a list of what we want a small scale GBCon to have. Here are what I've gleaned from previous posts.
-Show both movies and maybe the top RGB eps
-prop contests: best pack, best flightsuit, etc.(with prizes!)
-discussions on the deep questions concerning the common Ghosthead(Why DID Winston leave the courtroom?)
-memorabilia sales and trades
I would think that to pay for it we would have to sell tickets.
Please post more suggestions.

If I might make a suggestion. Something small like at a person's house or a community center would be great fun, but unless everyone who attends is from the area, it's a lot of work to make things run smoothly.
I do highly recommend that people organize small parties in their area, but people are also talking about a full blown convention. If you guys are truely committed to starting small and growing it into something bigger, you might want to consider linking the mini-GB con to a larger horror / science-fiction convention.
The advantages are huge - these conventions have already booked a large amount of space, often in a hotel or convention center near a hotel where they've arranged a special rate for rooms (they even sometimes have a travel company they work through that can offer great deals for anyone wanting or needing to fly to the convention). They've already organized a committee and volunteers to take care of everything (booking, money, refreshments, bringing in guests).
They are always looking for volunteers and if you were to work with them, you can then see about booking a room for GB fans to meet (many general horror / sci-fi fans enjoy the movie just as much as a die-hard ghosthead does), getting Ghostbusters shown in the convention movie room, helping dealers and collectors in GB merchandise to get tables. You can also organize GB activities like the RPG game in the games room, etc.
Something like this will provide a huge amount of practical experience (and not just as a GB fan), help you understand the amount of work involved in organizing something like this, and all without anyone having to make costly mistakes.
There are major conventions going on at least once a month across North America.
I'm not against a convention (I'd love to see a GB convention happen) and I'm not being pessimistic - this is over a decade of experience talking. I've seen a lot of fans get very excited about organizing a convention and then nothing happens - it wasn't as straightforward as they thought.

You make a great point castewar! It makes more sense to join a more general convention at first. Does anybody know about conventions or organizers off the top of their head. I'm gonna start looking around on the net. I don't care how big it is or if its independent, I just wanna help make SOMETHING happen.

what castewar's saying makes alot of sense. a few years back, i started up an Anime club at my high school, which first started out as a small group of friends just hanging out in the art room once a week. we got more people hooked, and then teamed up with another neighboring school. the trend could have kept growing, but people stopped participating and only wanted to sit around and watch whatever we had. now, the club is dying and no one wants to take responsibility for anything.
it takes alot of dedication to get the masses to take action. without that 110% effort, all you have is a couple people here and there, wishing for something to happen. it never will, cuz they never got together to make it become real. I want to show support for all of the GBN members here that are going out of their way to organize even the smallest meetings at someones house, willing to actually DO something. Anyone can say, "wouldnt it be awesome if there was a GB con?"

This is a rather old post. I sortve let it die out after alot of people seemed to have some negative tendancies about it but Im happy its back again.
Anyways, I think next year sometime having a more national gathering of anyone that could do it, rather than just a local state thing would be really cool. Castewar had some sweet ideas about linking it with another convention, and if we got a website out and running specifically about the convetion or linked to gb.net or protoncharging.com or gbhq.com if they wanted to lend a hand so other fans who might not be directly on this board might find out.
I would suggest a convention in the midwest A. because I live in the midwest haha
and
B. Because most of the ghostheads live in the USA somewhere, as well as the canadian ghostheads so if maybe we kept it in the midwest it might not be as far to travel for some of the Canadians.
Just suggestions though so I might be out of my league with what Im talking about, but the more suggestions the better I say.

I also agree with the midwest idea, being a midwesterner (Chicago). I think either my sweet home Chicago or Milwaukee Wisconsin would make good choices because as large cities, they are likely to host major conventions.
PS Thanks for the list castewar.
Update: I've looked at a few conventions listed on castewar's links and the ones I saw offer party rooms for separate groups who want to get together. They offer a kits for setup and cleanup as well as rules.
look at this one as an example:
