why do some people hate GB2?

OR the people who hate it could be Egon/Janine shippers. They don't take prisoners. I've seen 'em get really nasty.
Okay, I admit I am one such shipper, but I haven't seen GBII yet.
Well, be warned--the scene with Janine and Louis in Venkman's apartment has been known to turn stomachs. It did mine...
Not just the Janine/Louis thing in specific, but Louis having a big role in particular was part of the problem with GB2. Rick Moranis is a funny man, and I know he's good friends with Ramis and the rest, but good grief, they had to graft on a new persona (lawyer) onto Louis to make him work at all in this movie. We'd already, by 1989, had three years of RGB episodes where we'd gotten along fine without him, and he felt shoehorned in.
Other reasons I didn't like GB2 as much:
Well, yeah, the old "sequels aren't as good." It's not an absolute law (Star Trek II was much better than I. The Empire Strikes Back is generally regarded as the best of the Star Wars movies) but GB2 was too much a paint-by-numbers regurgitation of GB1's story structure. How much did Empire resemble A New Hope? Not much at all. Same characters, same universe, competely different story.
Vigo was a cool villain, but as has been mentioned above, lacked the mysterious, dangerous "Oh Sh%%!" factor of Gozer. He even seemed pale compared to some of the RGB villains. It probably didn't help that the "undead villain in a portrait with designs on Venkman's girlfriend" angle gave me flashbacks to RGB's "Hard Knight's Day"
But I did enjoy GB2. I still do (though I admit I still fast forward through the make-out scene... )

Having been raised watching the original, GBII just felt plain 'ol weak. I especially didn't like the whole Janine/Louis thing.

Come on! Anyone of you who's ever been single for a long time in your life and then finally get the blessing of having your first kiss with someone really cute and who actually likes you should be reason enough to cut Louis Tully some slack. He represents the geek in all of us who finally gets the girl. Yeah, he kissed Dana Barret in Ghostbusters 1, but at the time he was possessed by Zuul and he wasn't the one in control of his body. In GB2, its totally Louis, himself, who gets and falls in love with the girl who desires him (Janine).
As far as Ghostbusters 2, the movie was good, but it could have been much better. Unfortunately, Ivan Reitman screwed up because he was responsible for the poor rush-job on the movie. Look on the website, First Church of Dan Aykroyd and explination of the Making of Ghostbusters 2, and check out the behind the scenes commentary of Ghostbuster 2. Reitman convinced Columbia Picures to bump GB2's debut date up several weeks early just to prove his team was capable of having all of the SFX and productions shots done on time. Also, he, Ramis, and Aykroyd suffered replacing quality for quantity when they did the editing for the movie.
There was actually a scene where after Louis Tully runs out of the firehouse in full GB regalia and uniform and sprints to the bus stop to catch a ride to Dana's museum. Well, instead of Slimer being the busdriver as it was seen in the final cut, it was originally shot where Slimer flies up behind Louis and startles him. The little green guy asks Louis if he can go with him to the museum (SLIMER ACTUALLY TALKS!), but Louis tells him "no". Disheartned, but not upset, Slimer gives Louis a bit, wet slimy kiss and flies off into the night.
That is just an example of why Ghostbusters 2 lacked in quality, because that scene that I just described would have been awesome in that movie, but Ramis and Reitman thought that scene wasn't necessary and took away from the flow of the movie and would have added on to another subplot in the movie. Well, its too late to go back and fix things, so here's hoping to a second sequel (knock on wood ).

GB2 was OK. It wasn't bad, but the original was far superior.

It is impossible to improve on a perfect movie (GB) but you could do a lot better to follow it up than GB2. As in the above Empire Strikes Back example: an excellent sequel worthy of a perfect original.
By the way, I liked Star Wars better than Empire... and Star Trek I better than II!

Props to Veedramon. It (the Janine/Louis thing) turned my tummy, too. Yes, I'm an E/J shipper, and the mere thought of her being with anyone else makes me shiver. As to why I'm not as fond of GB2 as I am of GB1 (I can't say don't like because I DON'T don't like it) is that it just seemed like it wasn't enough. Can't really explain it, really. And we shippers just know what we want- Egon and Janine together.

i have to disagree with mr.no_ghost. the scene with slimer and louis would have been HORRIBLE! i don't think slimer should have even been in the movie. a cameo would have been okay during the ghost montage, but no more.
another addition to the "sequels always suck" argument would be X2... TOTALLY better than the first.

I dunno, I think the Lousi v Slimer scenes woulda been funny if they were done right. But, as stated, Ivan rushed it to prove that he was an a-hole and we didn't get the best GB we could've.

Why don't some people like GB2? I can think of 3 reasons.
1. Most are Janine/Egon supporters. I think they need to get their heads examined(No offence).
2.They don't know what a good sequel is, even if that sequel sneaked up and bit them on their........AHEM!!!!
And numero tres(No.3), THEY'RE NUTS!!!!

Ha, well, I'm sorry. I am as diehard as they come. I would LOVE to say that GB2 is a flawless sequel, but outside of my bias...I cannot say that Ghostbusters 2 was a great sequel, it was a cash-in, on a great name, and a great idea. Everyone cries about Bill Murray killing Ghostbusters, I don't really believe that. I am one who believes that Ghostbusters 2 hurts the potential for a Ghostbusters 3 more than Bill Murray did. The plot is recycled, with a villain that just doesn't scare you, or someone that you sense the characters have a reason to fear. I don't really care about Egon/Janine, I don't really think that's crucial, if she shacks up with Louis...but I do agree that they shouldn't throw it in your face as much as they did. The whole plot was just recycled from the first movie, did i still like Ghostbusters 2?? of COURSE, most hard core Ghostbusters fans genuinely like the movie...but I can't honestly say it was a VERY good movie....I don't know how that makes me CRAZY...

I think that GB2 was a sellout to RGB fans. It seems that when it was written, more focus was put on appealing to a larger audience and not enough focus was put on creating an original storyline. Too bad, too, cause it would've made a great movie. I loved it but of course I'm biased 'cause I love everything about GB.

Indeed, GB2 had it's moments (River of slimer, Titanic etc) But it was far too close to the original story, let's see...
Ghostbusters
Three guys go into business...montage...recruit fourth member...big ghost sequence...end of the world like weather effects...big fight with evil force which ends in a climatic battle
Ghostbusters II
Four guys go back into business...montage...big ghost sequence...end of the world like weather effects...big fight with evil force which ends in a climatic battle
Also, I'm a big fan of only Egon and Janine being together, anything else is wrong...so very wrong!
Ghostbusters II was good, Ghostbusters was better
Am I a moron who needs my head examining because I know what's right? Do all the fans of Egon and Janine morons who need their heads examining because they know what's right? Hell no, you may call us morons...but you cannae take...Our Freedom!
Glances around the topic
Err...Egon and Janine forever!

Yeah,Ghostbusters was better than Ghostbusters 2,for one reason it had Stay Puft in it,he was wicked and still is,seeing him on the MTV movie awards the other night here in the UK was great.
But I also like Ghostbusters 2,although GB1 has more memorable scenes.
