I hate to burst your bubble but I had the same misconception when I was 17. I turned 17 1/2 and realized it was only a dream. Now that Im 18 I still want but realize its not going to happen untill i grow up and become the CEO of some major company. (again thats a huge if)
Thier were only a little over 2,000 59 Cadilac Commercial Chasis built (the frame of the ectomobile) Of those 2,000 and change they were sold to companys like Miller Metorite, Superior, they Converted them to ambulances and hearses, just like with todays conversion vans.
So if you have 2000 and change likes just take a stab and say that Miller Metorite Converted 1000 of them wich is a really high number, I doubt they got that many. Then they were 59 M&M Caddys. Of those 1000 (again 1000 is probably way to big of a number) you have to figure at least 500 have been scrapped) Others are sitting around in junk yards, and would only be found by chance. And then a tremoundous amount of money would be required to fix it up.
Other options… You could find a 59 Superior, which are still incredibly rare, almost as rare as the M&M. And they could be converted to look more like the M&M style, but this would require a lot of money.
Option #3, find a 58,60 and do a bunch of body work, the 59 was the only year with those big of fins, the 58s rear clip is square not rounded, the 60s body is almost identicle except for the fins. You could pull the fins of a junker 59, you could even get them off a regular 59 caddy, most, if not all the 59 caddys had fins…
Option#4 find a car with a similar frame length, and have the parts custom molded out of fiberglass.
Then you still have to spend the money on converting it to the ecto- a car that big costs a ton of money to be painted, then theirs the lights that will be a few grand… Blue Lights are not street legal… so you have to use another color, or have covers for them…. Plus all the other gadets on the roof at least another grand,
Thent thiers operating cost… the car is a boat, it ways over two tons (ecto owners correct me if im wrong) and gets very bad gas mileage, I believe like 6 miles to the gallon on premium….
It is very long, and manuevers poorley, and draws all kind of attention, you cant drive it around when you are really trying to get somewhere… Too many people will crowd around to look, would only want to take it out to show off basically.
I believe it cant climb so hills also (again correct me if im wrong)
then you have to do all the mainteance to the body and parts…
Dont expect to get one unless you have a lot of patience, time and money…
If you do, by all means go and get one it would be a blast….
Good Luck in your search!
