Don't look directly into the trap?

You know, I never really understood this. Ray said not to look into the tap, but I can;t help it it is so beautiful. So why is it so bad to look directly into the trap?

I have been trying to find the answer to this one. Why not?

I wonder if it similar to saying “Don't look directly into the sun.” Someone mind helping with this one. I have been a Ghostbusters fan as far back as I can remember, but some things I still don't get.

I chalk it up to two possibilities…

1. The light emitted from an open trap might be so bright that it can cause permanent eye damage (think welding without eye protection).

2. Perhaps, in order to contain ghosts the traps generate a small laser containment grid which is exposed when the trap is open (again, something you wouldn't want to expose your eyes to).

Or both #1 and #2.

That is what I figured too, but someone once said “Because it sucks spiritual things in it, it will suck your soul out.”

Umm…..

I know the soul part was wrong. This is why I added the big “umm..” to the end of it.

I seem to remember a similiar conversation about the trap a while back.

The soul thing is from Braxton's Return of the Ghostbusters - the ‘eyes being a window to the soul’ and such. A neat concept, sure, but decidedly (and I'm sure unashamedly) non-canon.

I'd figure eye damage for the safest bet, it is pretty bright.

Eye Damage was what I always placed my bet on. I have always wondered the candle power of the light field produced by the trap.

If the trap was extremely bright and your not apparently to look at it due to getting eye damage that would make sense to me. But I recall apart of the movie where Ray bassically says don't look at the trap and Egon states “Im looking at the Trap Ray…” wouldn't that cross out that reason for not looking at it? Or maybe with them have not testing the Equipment yet, Ray thought why take the chance of going blinde and play it safe by not doing anything bold by looking at the trap? Just a theory of course haha
