Spook Central has a section with excerpts from the scripts that lead up to the final shooting script. According to Spook Central, the original title was “Ghost Mashers,” and would have starred Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and Eddie Murphy. Their character's names were to be, respectively, Stantz, Venkman, and Ramsey. It goes on to say that the “Ghost Mashers” were apparently little more than “$10,000 a year janitors that worked for someone else and really had no technical expertise whatsoever.” That someone else was an individual named Shandor…
It's a very interesting read, at least for someone like me, who likes to see how stuff like this gets created. I would suggest you check it out.

Take a look at Don Shay's book “Making Ghostbusters.” Everything that you want and more is in this holy grail for Ghostheads. You SHOULD be able to find it in your local library or your local university library (ours here at LMU lists the book as LOST however they ordered a replacement copy over four months ago… interesting because it's out of print).

Not to say anything bad about Ghostbusters, but I think Ghostsmahers sounds better.

Yes, it was called Ghost Mashers. It took place in outerspace with rival ghost mashing companies. There you have it.
