Personally I think one of the many reasons Ghostbusters II and the whole franchise failed was the lack of explaining and making the movie fit with the cartoon /Cartoon fit with the movie.
But, maybe I'm the only one that thinks about this, when reading about a new video game, and film.

Most people consider the cartoon in it's own separate universe somewhat.

Most people consider the cartoon in it's own separate universe somewhat. It's still a huge part of the franchise and ehh, I wouldn't really say fan fiction, :p True the movies pretty much stay in their own realm. The cartoon allowed the characters to do a lot but really the cartoon would have you believe the Ghostbusters “movie” is made after, based after the events of their lives that was the GB movies as we know it.
Zack;134357Part of what even further confuses me is that the second movie they call the green ghost Slimer, which isn't the name for him. Infact he didn't have a name.
That way it seems far more appropriate for the cartoon to reference the movie. Plus everyone knows the movies. I wouldn't expect Dan Aykroyd in the new game to start talking about Simon Quegg or Dopey Dog :-) I personally never try to reason too many ties between the two(movies and cartoon) (*winston) Likely they were never meant to seriously be a “movie” continuation. Maybe they didn't know they'd be making GB2 either.

I wouldn't say the franchise really failed, up until about EGB most people would probably say. There are a lot of people probably quick to sweep EGB as canon under the rug lol The “discrepancies” never really bothered me.

However, I think Dan should think about the cartoons when reading the script

*I can understand why some people want to separate the two, however in my opinion RGB and even EGB expounded on the “movie cannon” so richly that I can't and won't separate the two, slight of their different looks…And honestly, as stated above, there really is nothing short of the “Legion” series, that “retconned” the story from 1984 to 2004, that really contradicts the other that severely …

So in a way, Dan should make sure the cannon from the animated is respected. Its part of ghostbusters matter how hard you try to avoid it.
