H.P Lovecraft themes in the first one.

Anyone noticed some HP Lovecraft-esque themes in the original movie? such as how spirits invade the world with eliminators using technology and of course the whole apartment building as a device to summon the supernatural.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to reading the complete works of Lovecraft… but I don't remember eliminators using technology to defeat invading spirits to be that great a theme in any of his stories, or whole buildings built to be summoning devices.

Well… yeah. I mean all the names of the creatures that Louis mentioned while he was posessed was a big tip of the hat to HP. I mean, there's an entire RGB episode where Cthulu gets awakened. He didn't really do a lot of ghost-related stuff, as it was mainly just monsters and demigods. I could see the Terror Dogs being something out of a story though.

Actually, in “The Dunwich Horror”, some of the characters ban together to take down an invisible spirit-like monster with things they invented to harm it, including a device to actually see it.

This happend at the end, after the main character is mauled and killed by a Guard Dog at a library entrance.

But since JokerSmells brought it up, the characters that kill the inivisible monster kinda seemed like a more serious version of the Ghostbusters in a way.

I remember a wierd tales (not neccisarily lovecraft) story in which a supernautural detective used a handheld electric pentagram to detect spirits, always reminded me of the GB's

Well basically the Samatartan themes and the idea with technology with beings from another dimension is very lovecraft-esque you gotta admit.

Cultists on the East coast use architecture to summon an extradimensional elder god to end the world.

Nope. Don't see any Lovecraft references there.
