Alice in Wonderland in 3D.
First and foremost, it was nice to finally see a Tim Burton film at the cinema… Even though
Corpse Bride and
Sweeney Todd came out at a time where I had the ability and funds to do so, I just never took the time to see them.
On the mention of
Sweeney Todd, it was also good that I left the cinema having really enjoyed
Alice in Wonderland after how disappointing Todd had been… despite the production values, cast and director of that piece… it left me feeling far from satisfied… something this wasn't in danger of.
The film featured a great cast list, comprising a platoon of recognisable British actors and of course, one excellent American actor. Of special note was Christopher Lee's small, but unforgettable role… of which I will not divulge… just to say that it was apt, and really made my day.
The visuals were more relaxed compared to Burton's usual style, but this was a good thing. It gave “Underland” a surreal edge, and a creepy vibe where neccesary, without going over the top.
The designs of the the Red Queen's card soldiers and the White Queen's chess soldiers were especially awesome, perfectly stylised and impossible.
Mia Wasikowska served as a fine heroine, providing a strong, slightly rebellious character who managed to take the strange landscape and characters surrounding her in her stride… I was also surprised to learn that she's Australian, as she managed to mask her accent well.
Finally, this is one of the films I feel works with the current popularity of 3D.
I greatly enjoyed this new take on the Lewis Carroll tale.
