Am I the only one that smells a Saturday Morning Cartoon series or endless series of sequels based on the movie in the future?
There is talk of a sequel, which leaves me in two minds.
On one hand, Dreamworks does have the rights to the whole book series it was based on, although I'm not sure if the others would work well as a film… even if they have the rights, they might opt for an original story.
Putting that aside though, part of me is up for a sequel… I'd almost like to see another installment of the same length made, as there's still probably plenty to tell about Hiccup, Toothless… and the people of Berk. And a new film would give us more awesome scenes of flying, of Hiccup and Toothless bonding… and of how Hiccup tweaks both the harness he invented, and his prosthetic
However, the part of me that is reserved on the idea of a sequel, is that to pull it off, it has to be as well written, thought out, plotted, scored… and be given as good a play on the emotional scale as the original… and the formula of the original is often lost when it comes to a sequel.
If they were able to make the sequel as good as the original, or even better, then I'm all for it. But if they'd end going down the same route as the Shrek franchise, I'd rather How To Train Your Dragon remain a standalone.
