Propper debate-to build or to buy?

When i built my pack and trap, i always came upon a small problem. I love building things and giving them my own touch. I never had extravegant funds when building my props, so i resorted to building most of the parts. i bought all of my materials at home depot and radio shack. I never bought any of the “real-deals” on internet electronic sites. I just did my best in building my own, and they all came out just as fine. both of my props are well done and highly detailed.

what are your thoughts on the subject? Would you rather spend the extra money and by the actual part, or would you put your own touch to your props and build a replica??

You just don't get that feeling when you buy something. You don't have too much appreciation for such things unless you make it yourself. I am feeling crummy after just buying a Spacer, like it wouldn't have been that hard. I have been offered free packs, and I turn them down.. I don't really want one unless I make it.

Dang ectoman…take one of those free packs and give it to me. I would love to make a pack(I tried once), but I just dont have the skills or materials to do it.

I want to build one, I fell that I need to. But I'm not one of the lucky people that can take a pile of trash and get a pack, I need something that looks like it's supposed to, all I need to do is sand it, paint it, cut off axcess stuff, mount it, and be done with it. I build models, but in the box I don't get 30 little squeres of plastic, it at least resembles what it's supposed to be when I get it.

I think being a ghosthead is a lot like being a Jedi. You gotta build your own saber/pack to be a TRUE Ghosthead/Jedi.

After being here for months, I've come to relize that if you plan on buying anything pre-made, expect a big pricetag, so even though you cant build crap, find someone near-by that can, tis what I am currently doing.

But also relize if one is going for a certain degree of accuracy, then some things will be better purchased. IE: A Bumper. Sometimes, if you can find em cheap enough, buying the piece will save hours of labor and headaches, IE: The spacer.

So, I believe that 75% should be done by hand, while you can fudge the other 25% with cash, that is, if you want your pack to look like the movies.

I agree with Jedi.. and I think it's all how you view your priorities.

I have built my own trap out of scratch, with bare hands and a hacksaw. I built the goggles with bare hands and some parts from a helpful person from a.s.a.p., and I'm totally improvising on the slimeblower. People might hate what my props look like, but to me, they are priceless. (But if you want to buy it off me for $100 each, knock your self out smile).

Some things have to be bought for instance the clippards and the dale resistors,

I built most of the pack myself except for things that had to be built, I had some help, with the exception of the lightboard, but that was primarily my friends doing…
