How thick is the spacer i made my about 3 in think i think it should be right but correct me if i am wrong.

It's actually 2.75 inches thick. So you aren't that much off, it would work and nobody would notice.

If you're using ply-wood, build you spacer up to 2.75 and look at it. If it looks too short, add the extra 1/4 inch.
Either way, you can't go wrong.
