It's gotta be a calculator. You're talking about the thing Venkman slaps out of his hands and yells, “Stop that!” Right?

Always found that to be one of the funniest parts in the movie.

Me too actually. The way Murray says it is hilarious.

I believe it's another device that Egon was using during the rooftop scene.. When Egon says to Ray “ This looks extraordinarly bad. ”

Could it be an EMF detector?

Perhaps the script might clue us in with a description?

I think he was guessing on that…but ya…it does look like a paper feed calculator doesn't it…

It's too small to be a paper-feed; in at least one of the storybooks you can see a still taken from the “advertisement” where it's clearly clipped to his lab coat lapels. A financial calculator has many buttons of indeterminate purpose, so this could be a case of “if it looks vaguely technical, we get to use it.” Same could be said of the Ghost Sniffer.

PS: I just realized that the calculator could be an early scientific calculator, if that helps.

I use financial calculators at work that has a paper-feed, and that is definitely WAY too small. You can't even hold a paper-feed calculator with one hand, let alone fit it in your pocket. The ones we have are kind of old though, unless the size shrunk down recently, they're definitely not pocket size.

The grey device Egon used at Gozer's temple was a Gamma Rate Meter.

From GBFans:

“The IM-179/PD was ‘a miniature gamma ratemeter for placement in aircrew survival kits’ that employed a pressurized ion chamber. It only used two push button controls: read and test. The meter and dial are luminescent (Ra-226 radioluminescent paint) . The instructions on the case are self-explanatory.”

i always thought it was a calculator and before Ray's plan of “get her” Egon picks it back up and when they run out of the libary and are discussing it egon says:

“I wouldn't say the experience was totally wasted. According to these new readings, I think we have an excellent chance of actually catching a ghost and holding it indefinitely.”

That is definitly a calulator, and I belive it is the same calculator when he is quoting the intrest rates for rays house.

Didn't they say somewhere when they filmed GB1 that they had filmed all of them using the PKE but it only looked believable when Egon used it?

Yeah. The PKE prop had 3 buttons I think they said that made the wings fall and rise. Harold was the only one to work it without it seem like he was making the wings fall. Ivan also said that they indeed tried to get everyone to use it, but it didn't look believable enough.

Also, some of you mentioned that it could be a few things that Egon uses. How do you all know that it is not something else Egon invented to be multi-purpose. We sure as hell know real PKE meters don't exist….at least nothing like that so Egon had to have made it himself so maybe he made another little item out of other parts to help him calculate faster and keep readings.
