Because they knew it would make a butt load of money and it wouldn't cost them squat. Plus they get to dump a bunch of new toys on the market and make money off those too.

The folks at Universal probably decided that it was a win-win situation by re-releasing it with a few modifications. They could release some new merchandise to market comemorating the 20th anniversary re-release and they could increase anticipation for an inevitable DVD release. The same thing has been done before with other movies - the most recent being Spy Kids: Special Edition, which was released to theaters with new footage right before the DVD release of this new cut.

Its anniversary, for starters.

The second reason is that since ET seemed to follow Star Wars in everything else, Spielberg probably thought it appropriate to digitally enhance his flick and rerelease it in the theaters since the original print was aging.

The third reason: I refer to the wise, the powerful and the just plain Yogurt, “Merchandising…”

I too would go with the reason that Universal merely re-released E.T. because it would generate more popularity 20 years after its release. Why, the other day I found a soundtrack to E.T.: The 20th Anniversary!

Maybe because it was one if the biggest grossing movies of all time? It made a lot.. a whole lot more than Ghostbusters.

Personally, ET scared the living hell outta me as a little kid, and I still don't like it…..plus I think the toys are wierd….and somewhat ugly.
